Our high capacity gear manufacturing facility at Industrial Sprockets & Gears, Inc. allows us to meet high volume demands without prolonged lead times. For the project highlighted here we manufactured a large lot of 400 specialized triple double sprockets for use in an offshore oil drilling application. The sprockets have an outer diameter of 6", are made of heat treated 4140 steel, and weigh approximately 40 lbs. each. The shape of the chrome-moly steel sprockets was machined on CNC equipment and the sprocket teeth were cut on precision gear hobbing machinery. Dimensional tolerances as tight as ±0.001" and AGMA Class #6 quality standards were held during machining and finishing, according to customer specifications. The sprockets were inspected according to our internal quality management system to verify conformance to all customer specifications and applicable industry standards.
We have a longstanding relationship with this customer, and were therefore the natural choice when a large number of custom gears were needed. To extend the life of the tooling, the cutting tools were ion implanted, which allowed us to cut the hard alloy steel sprockets as efficiently and accurately as possible. Especially in high volume applications, the design and quality of the tooling have a significant impact on the cost and quality of the end product. We have extensive in-house design and engineering capabilities, including a comprehensive tool room, to ensure that projects progress as quickly and smoothly as possibly. For this project, all sprockets were machined, heat treated, finished, and shipped within the specified lead time of four weeks.
